Dear Parents,
Greetings for the festive season.
This is in an extension to my previous newsletter where I stressed upon the importance of reading at home with your child. Sight words are the beginning of developing a love for reading.
A sight word is one that is recognized and read immediately and are words which are frequently used in a text. Sight words are words that are recognized by sight, without having to sound out or use picture clues. Sight words need to be mastered, not to enhance reading but to make it functional. Stumbling over these high use words can lead to frustration for any reader, at any age. Learning high frequency words by sight helps children build confidence and fluency in their reading, thus reading becomes easier and makes more sense.
Reading is all about constructing meaning from text. The meaning is dependent on the rapid and effortless recognition of words. As children start learning to
read it is important to develop a bank of words that are known by sight. We have introduced the same and it is a delight to watch our little ones looking for the
words and circling them in the newspapers. It is nice to hear from children during circle time that they actually circled 20 "The's" at home all by themselves!
Regards,
Sarita di.
